Galaxy Photography
Workshop&Coaching
The best time to see and photograph the Milky Way in the area Teide is between June and October. The nights are crystal clear and the galactic centre of the Milky Way is high in the sky and shines particularly brightly.
The Milky Way is also visible on Tenerife during the rest of the year. Although the centre of the galaxy is not as bright in the evenings in summer, the starry skies at higher altitudes offer fantastic conditions for observing the fainter winter arm.
The nights around the new moon are particularly suitable.
The brightest part of the centre is already visible from late twilight onwards.
At midnight, the galactic centre stands above the southern horizon and is clearly visible as a silvery, misty band.
Accompaniment on request is very welcome!

The period between June and October is the best time to view and photograph the Milky Way around Mount Teide. The nights are crystal-clear and the galactic centre of the Milky Way is high in the sky and shines particularly brightly. The Milky Way is also visible in Tenerife during the rest of the year. Meeting points
Photography
begins with your own visual idea.
The camera’s viewfinder is your creative field and provides the framework for effective composition with deliberate
framing.
The choice of lens, aperture, shutter speed and ISO setting have a significant impact on your photograph.
The workshop will explain the interplay between your choice of framing, perspective, lighting and technical settings,
and your visual idea.
All camera systems that enable you to adjust the exposure parameters are welcome, including analogue cameras.
You should be as familiar as possible with your camera. Of course, I’m willing offer advice.
At the end of the day
you’ll have spectacular shots and new photographic experiences.
As a takeaway, I’ve prepared five postcards and a photography guide with creative and technical information.

Equipment
Participants should be familiar with their camera. The camera has manual settings –
A tripod is recommended but not necessary; a polarising filter and neutral density filter may also be useful.
An additional tripod is available.
Workshops using a MOBILE camera are possible – e.g. an iPhone.
Sturdy shoes and sun protection are recommended.
Liability
Workshop participants are responsible for their personal safety. This applies to personal injury and property damage, particularly in cases of negligence for which the participant is responsible. D.W. Schmalow, as the organiser and leader of the workshop, is exempt from any liability. Participants are responsible for arranging any insurance. The workshop begins and ends at the agreed meeting points. By booking, the participant confirms that they accept the liability notices.

After studying graphic design, Detlef Schmalow has been working as an independent, freelance photo designer nationally and internationally for industrial companies and advertising agencies since 1979.
From 1994 to 2019 he manages his large studio in Mannheim.
In addition to his contract work as a photo designer,

he realizes free projects, photographs for a theater book, awarded with the German Book Prize. His free works are shown in exhibitions.
Detlef Schmalow loves to travel, loves people, wildlife and nature.He is inspired by magical moments - without any staging.
The deliberately artistic, fine coloring, give the photographs a restrained, sensitive impression aesthetics and thus its own characteristic.

t is my artistic freedom to live and experience fine art photography, when I am touched by my senses during photography.
Based on the tangible experience, it is my concern to work out the photographs very sensitive in high quality and thus subtle with its own characteristic.
I have chosen a reduced color or black & white elaboration to connect the world of nature with my photography.This is supported by selected fine art papers and high quality presentation materials.
The photographs are available in selected formats in low editions.

Nach einem Grafik-Design Studium arbeitet Detlef Schmalow seit 1979 als selbständiger, freischaffender Photodesigner überregional und international für Industrieunternehmen und Werbeagenturen.
Von 1994 bis 2019 leitet er sein Großraumstudio in Mannheim.
Neben seiner Auftragsarbeit als Photodesigner,

verwirklicht er freie Projekte, fotografiert für ein Theaterbuch, ausgezeichnet mit dem deutschen Buchpreis. Seine freien Arbeiten werden in Ausstel-lungen gezeigt.

Es ist meine künstlerische Freiheit die Fine Art Photography zu leben und zu erleben, wenn ich beim Fotografieren durch meine Sinne angesprochen werde.
Getragen durch das spürbar Erlebte, ist es mir ein Anliegen die Photographien sehr sensibel und hochwertig und damit feinsinnig auszuarbeiten mit einer eigenen Charakteristik.
Ich habe eine reduzierte Farb- bzw. Schwarz & Weiß Ausarbeitung gewählt, um die Welt der Natur mit meiner Fotografie zu verbinden.
Unterstützt wird dieses Anliegen durch ausgewählte Fine Art Papiere und hochwertige Präsentationsmaterialien.
